The Bangladesh women’s national team fell to its second crushing defeat to South Africa in as many matches, losing by 95 runs in the second of the tour’s three ODIs in Johannesburg on Sunday. South Africa were put in to bat by the visitors and posted 237/4 after an unbeaten 100 by captain Mignon du Preez and 71 from Lizelle Lee, who also scored 77 against Bangladesh in her international debut on Friday. Dane van Niekerk chipped in with 34 to support Du Preez at the end of the innings.
Du Preez was named the player of the match for her century.
Jahanara Alam, Fahima Khatun and Rumana Ahmed picked up a wicket apiece for a Bangladeshi attack that failed to
trouble the Proteas Women for the second consecutive match.
Bangladesh’s chase began steadily, with openers Fargana Hoque (25) and Ayasha Rahman (26) taking the score to 55 before the latter fell in the 16th over. Fargana followed her partner to the pavilion three overs later and the rest of the order capitulated. Captain Salma Khatun scored 36 to provide some resistance, but nobody else reached double figures.
Sunette Loubser took 3/15 and Van Niekerk took 3/27 to lead the South African attack, while Elriesa Theunissen chipped in with 2/28 to dismiss Bangladesh for 142 and win the series with one match left. The third ODI is at Centurion on Tuesday.
