Employees of private cellular phone operator Banglalink on Thursday staged a sit-in in front of the company’s headquarters at Gulshan in the city, demanding regularisation of their job and wage increase as per the labour law. A total of 92 employees of Banglalink’s maintenance and operation section staged the demonstration that started at 11:00am and continued till 6pm to press home their various demands.
The agitated employees said they would run their movement until the authorities meet the demands as per the labour law.
They said around 110 people have been working in the maintenance section of the second largest operator since 2005.
But, the operator did not incorporate them as permanent workers during the last seven years. Besides, the salary was not increased during the period.
Under the circumstances, 82 staffs have already filed cases against the company with the labour court on August 4, the employees added.
The aggrieved employees also alleged the authorities were threatening to file criminal cases against them if they did not withdraw their cases.
They said the authorities have only regularised the contractual job without any increments or benefits, which is a clear violation of the labour law.
Banglalink at a media statement said, ‘This is an internal matter that is being discussed among the employees concerned and the Company’s officials. We are currently implementing an action plan and we look forward to the employees’ positive participation.’
