The Bangladesh Bank on Thursday asked the scheduled banks to verify whether the buildings they are going to select for their offices and branches got the
building code approval from the authority concerned.
The BB issued a circular to the managing directors and chief executive officers of the banks saying that the banks should also examine the structural strength of the buildings by their own panels of engineers before using the spaces as banks’ office or branches.
The BB issued the circular after more than 227 people were killed and thousand others injured as a multi-storied building collapsed at Savar on Wednesday.
Although the building developed cracks on Tuesday, owners of five garments in the building forced employees to come to work on Wednesday.
The multi-storied building housed a branch of a BRAC Bank but no employee or client of the branch faced the accident due to a precautionary measure taken by the bank, the circular said.
The BB advised the banks to take more precautionary measures in selecting places for the banks’ offices to remain safe from such type of incident.
The central bank also suggested that internal inspection teams of the banks would conduct assessment time-to-time in a bid to ensure the safety measures of their branches or offices.
