The agitated workers of Opsonin Group vandalised Opso Pharma factory
at Bogra Road in the Barisal city on Tuesday afternoon.
The workers pressed 13-points demand on increasing service benefits. Other demands include appointment letter, job regularisation, yearly increment and bonus and no sacking without prior notice.
The demonstration further spread out to the other factories leading to production stoppage.
‘Factories of Opsonin group do not follow the wage rules and labour laws,’ claimed the workers.
Witnesses said agitated workers started demonstration inside the factory premise after their 13-point demands were refused and two of their leaders were assaulted.
The workers assaulted three management officials and vandalised the rooms and factory machineries at 3:40pm.
Police used tear gas and fired blank to control the situation at 4:40pm.
Workers said at least 20 workers were injured in the police action and some were admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Police said they had detained five protesters. No case was filed till filing this report.
June 18 was the deadline for implementing the demands promised earlier by the authorities to be fulfilled.
The management officials, however, denied talking over the matter which resulted in the vandalism, claimed the workers.
Police were deployed at other factories of Opsonin Group at Kabi Jibanananda Sarak and Rupatoli, said Saidur Rahman Khan, executive officer (admin) of Opsonin Barisal office.
