The battle for a Super League place in the Dhaka Premier League took a serious turn after Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club claimed they have qualified despite a defeat to Brothers Union in their last match on Saturday. Brothers beat Sheikh Jamal by six wickets to confirm their place in the top six, but the latter claimed that the former had fielded a suspended player in Sohrawardi Shuvo and that Brothers’ points should be docked and awarded to Sheikh Jamal.
‘As per the bylaws we will get two points and qualify for the Super League as Brothers fielded Shuvo,’ Sheikh Jamal cricket committee chairman Mushfiqur Rahman told reporters. ‘We have already submitted a petition to the CCDM [Cricket Committee of the Dhaka Metropolis] and hopefully they will give the decision in our favour.’
Brothers manager Amin Khan claimed they were not aware of any suspension of Sohrawardi as the CCDM did not inform it to them.
Match referee Debabrata Paul added that they had allowed Sohrawardi to play as they had no prior information about his suspension.
CCDM secretary Rakib Haider Pavel said that they had sent a letter to Brothers informing them about Sohrawradi’s suspension for one match for his misconduct in the Brothers-Abahani Limited match.
‘A Brothers official named Nader received the letter, so it’s not true that they were not informed,’ said Pavel.
Brothers manager Amin counter-attacked claiming they had no such official named Nader.
Asked why they did not inform it to match officials, CCDM secretary Pavel said it is not their job.
‘We informed the matter to the umpires committee and it is their duty to inform them.’
Obaidul Huque, match referee of the eventful Abahani-Brothers match on November 7, confirmed the suspension.
‘Sohrawardi was reported by the umpires for misconduct, so I called him for a hearing and handed a one-match suspension,’ he said.
