PROPOSAL FOR SEPARATE PAY STRUCTURE
BB asked to seek recommendation of national pay commission

The finance ministry has asked Bangladesh Bank to seek recommendation of the National Pay Commission on its proposed separate pay scale for the officials and employees, official said.
‘If the government allows the central bank to have a separate pay structure for its employees, it will increase pressure from other government agencies like the National Board of Revenue and the Police for the same, putting fresh burden on the exchequer,’ said a senior official of finance ministry.
The official also said that the National Pay Commission could actually provide recommendation on the central bank proposal for separate pay scale for its officials and employees.
The finance ministry sent a letter to the governor of Bangladesh Bank on Tuesday asking for seeking recommendation of the National Pay Commission on the BB proposal.
In the letter, the finance ministry said it had agreed with the proposal of Bangladesh Bank, but the central bank should seek recommendation from the National Pay Commission for separate pay scale.
The government had constituted the seventh National Pay Commission on August 30 this year to recommend for a revised pay structure for the civil servants and pension holders within six month. The Commission is headed by former finance secretary M Mustafizur Rahman as its chairman.
In last week, the finance ministry sent the proposal of central bank for separate pay scale to the Cabinet Division.
Earlier, the finance ministry turned down the BB proposal arguing that a separate pay scale for the central bank employees could create social discrimination among the government officials and employees.
If the BB proposal is approved, the central bank officials and employees will find around 50 per cent rise in their salaries and financial benefits, the official said.
While talking to Bangladesh Bank officials, they informed that the officials and employees of the central bank in neighbouring countries — India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka – were drawing their salaries and financial benefits in separate scales, which is higher than that of the pay structures for the government officials and employees.
