The central bank on Wednesday sent one of its general managers, Md Golam Mostafa, from inspection department to ‘leisure leave’ (forced leave) because of his ‘poor performance’.
The BB took the decision at an inter-departmental meeting among inspection related departments at the central bank headquarters in the capital.BB deputy governor Abu Hena Mohd Razee Hassan presided over the meeting while the central bank governor Atiur Rahman and general managers of Department of Banking Inspection-1, DBI-2, DBI-3 and DBI-4 attended.
A BB official told New Age on Wednesday that the central bank governor had asked the GMs to present their performance before the meeting.
The BB governor placed some queries to DBI-4 general manager Md Golam Mostafa at the meeting but he failed to reply accurately, he said.
DBI-4 examines the books of accounts and related documents and records through on-site inspection of Islamic banks, NRB banks, foreign banks and Islamic banking branches of commercial banks.
The BB governor asked Mostafa which Islamic bank’s performance was the worst among eight Shariah-based banks, but he could not make any answer to the question.
The BB governor also asked which Islamic bank’s performance was the best among the eight banks. Mostafa said Islami Bank Bangladesh is now
Continued on B2 showing the best performance.
The government and the BB have been closely monitoring the Islami Bank for its connection with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
‘The BB governor then asked the GM why the biggest loan scandals frequently occurred in Chittagong where the businessmen had not repaid their loans after declassification. Mostafa replied that the Chittagong
branch of the central bank can say about the matter’, according to the BB official.
Against the backdrop, the BB governor ordered Human Resource Department-1 to instantly send Mostafa to leisure leave.
Under the leisure leave, a BB official will have to attend the office but he or she cannot conduct daily official work.
The leisure leave situation for a BB official is considered as officer on special duty, the BB official said.
