The Bangladesh Cricket Board is all set to ask the National Sports Council to take necessary steps to hold its long overdue election as it is facing a race against time to
fulfil an International Cricket Council obligation.
The BCB must give the ICC an explanation at its annual general meeting, which is scheduled at Lords’ from June 25-29, as the issue will be up for discussion.
The ICC at its 2011 AGM had decided that every member must have an elected body before June 2013, or face a suspension, making it almost mandatory for the BCB to hold an election including the post of president.
However, the process seems to be stalled since a case was filed against the amended BCB constitution by two sports organisers earlier this year.
The BCB is currently run by a 13-member ad-hoc committee, which took over the charge on November 27 with a mandate to hold an election within three months.
Officials said they held back the election process as it is yet to be decided which constitution should be followed.
However, with the ICC meeting looming large the BCB has no choice left but to ask the NSC, the sports regulatory body, which is responsible for holding the election.
‘There is a chance of submitting a letter to the NSC asking them to arrange a schedule for the overdue election,’ said a top official of the BCB requesting not to be named.
‘This would prove our intention of holding the election during the ICC meeting,’ he added.
Two former BCB councillors, Reaz Ahmed Babu and Moshiur Rahman, recently sent a legal notice to NSC asking why it should not take initiative to hold the election on the basis of 2008 constitution as the new amended constitution is yet to be cleared by court.
The NSC responded to the notice but ruled out the chance of holding the election under 2008 constitution as the court is yet to decide the fate of the 2012 constitution.
‘We were told by the NSC that as the 2012 amended constitution is sub judice there cannot be any BCB election under the constitution of 2008,’ Reaz Babu told New Age.
