The Bangladesh Cricket Board is all set to name Mashrafee bin Murtaza as the new one-day international captain for the national cricket team when it will hold a crucial meeting today. The BCB, had in principal, agreed to split the captaincy in its previous meeting but decided to wait until the end of West Indies tour. ‘I personally think that we should have three different teams for the three different formats and we have to think of different captains for those formats,’ BCB president Nazmul Hasan told reporters at a programme on Monday.
‘At present, we do not have that many players to make three teams but captains should be different,’ said Nazmul, adding the current national captain Mushfiqur Rahim will be relived of some of his responsibilities in the coming series.
‘As a performer, Mushfiqur is our best batsman at his present form,’ said Nazmul. ‘At the same time he also needs to lead the team and do the wicket-keeping job. This is a tremendous workload for a player.
‘So I think that we will have to relieve him of some of his duties. We believe that he should leave the captaincy in at least one version,’ said Nazmul.
Mushfiq scored the only century in Bangladesh’s recent Test series against West Indies but the Tigers ended up losing both the matches.
Bangladesh’s performance had been below-par throughout the tour when they also lost all three one-day internationals, something the BCB will review in their meeting.
‘Assessment of the West Indies tour will be the main priority in the board meeting,’ said the BCB president. ‘We will discuss the reports we have received from all concerned people.’
Nazmul however added that he is against the idea of bringing massive changes in the national team set up as World Cup 2015 is only just six months away.
‘We will make the necessary changes by keeping the World Cup undisturbed,’ said Nazmul. We will make a huge change, if needed, but only after the World Cup is over’
While the meeting is unlikely to bring a wholesale change in national team set up, BCB sources said that the board of directors will discuss the plan of a complete revamp in country’s first-class structure.
It has been reported that the BCB is considering an idea of leaving the first-class cricket to Dhaka-based club taking, as officials believe it will make the game more competitive.
Currently seven divisional sides and a team from the Dhaka Metropolis play in first-class National Cricket League. Two years ago the BCB also introduced a separate first-class tournament called Bangladesh Cricket League.
