The Barisal City Corporation is constructing shopping-stalls on the leased land of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority in the river port area on the bank of River Kirtankhola.
The BIWTA authorities sent a letter to the BCC protesting against the construction but the BCC authorities ignored the letter. The BIWTA Barisal office executive engineer, Md Shahnewaz, has said that during the last caretaker government period, the BCC took three acres of land in the port area on temporary lease from BIWTA on condition of paying Tk 3.16 lakh as the lease fee annually.
The BCC has constructed Barisal City Market on a portion of the land and without informing the BIWTA authorities, they have started constructing seven business-stalls on another portion which was selected for gardening and beautification of the port area, the BIWTA official has alleged.
He has informed that constructing a permanent structure on a temporarily leased is not legal.
The Barisal River Port officer, Md Shahidullah, has said that they sent a letter on Tuesday and will take legal action soon as the BCC authorities have not stopped the construction work.
The BCC executive engineer, Md Motaleb, has said that the construction is not being done breaking the terms and conditions of the contract.
The BCC is ready to face any legal battle, he has added.
