Activists of the ruling party-backed Bangladesh Chhatra League Sunday night beat up a businessman inside a dormitory at Chittagong University.
The injured businessman was under treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
In protest at the attack, the businessmen closed all the shops at the campus on Monday.
Witnesses said about 10 to 12 of BCL men, led by Mizanur Rahman Minu, a third year student of anthropology and also join secretary of the CU unit, picked Ziaur Rahman Zia, who runs a photocopy shop on the campus, demanding Tk 10,000 at around 10:30pm on Sunday.
The BCL men took him to a room of Shah Jalal Hall and beat him up. They stabbed him with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured.
On information, workers of shops on the campus rescued him and sent him to the CU medical centre.
In protest at the attack on Zia, the university shop owners’ association closed all the three hundred shops on the campus on Monday at around 8:30am and brought out a procession demanding arrest of the BCL men.
Later the leaders of the organizations placed a written complaint to the CU proctor in this regard.
CU proctor Professor Siraj Uddowla said, ‘We have received a complaint form the businessman regarding attack on one of their fellows. We are looking into the matter.’
