Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the associate organization of Awami League (AL), have been engaging in clashes, capturing university dormitories and vandalizing student’s assets across the country in violation of AL president Sheikh Hasina’s instructions.
After the landslide victory of AL-led grand alliance on Dec 29 election, Sheikh Hasina asked BCL leaders to refrain from all wrongdoings and ensure peaceful coexistence in all educational institutions spreading a hope of change in student politics.
But according to the newspaper reports, Hasina’s direction is being violated randomly across the country as BCL workers are out to establish their supremacy on the campuses.
A tense situation has been prevailing in the educational institutions of the country since the holding of the election on Dec 29. Three higher institutions- Khulna Medical College (KMC), Khulna Government BL College and Sir Salimullah Medical College were forced to shut down for an indefinite period in last ten days.
In last few days, BCL activists occupied the Dhaka University dormitories, vandalized several rooms, locked in intra-party clashes and attacked activists of rival organizations on the campus for several periods.
They also locked in clashes in other institutions including Rajshahi University, Chittagong University, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology and Dhaka Alia Madrasah.
Political analyst Prof Imtiaz Ahmed, a teacher of DU Inter-national Relations, observed this as an ominous sign for the future of politics in the country.
“We heard that Sheikh Hasina ordered BCL leaders to refrain from doing such wrong thing. If that order is not executed, it proves the BCL activists are out of control,” he said.
BCL general secretary Mahfuzul Haider Chowdhury Roton, however, denied the involvement of his activists in the countrywide campus violence.
“We are strictly abiding by the instruction of Sheikh Hasina and ensuring coexistence of all on the campuses. But Chhatra Dal and Shibir men are trying to make the campuses volatile. We will resist their ill-attempt and ensure a peaceful atmosphere in all educational institutions,” he told this correspondent.
