Bikalpadhara Bangladesh (BDB) secretary general Mahi B Chowdhury has said his party will join hands with the main opposition BNP immediately to contest in the upcoming general election together. “We want to forge an election alliance with BNP outside the 18-party alliance to contest in the upcoming general polls together against the Awami League-led grand alliance,” he added.
He made the announcement at a press briefing, held at National Press Club on Tuesday noon.
About his party stance over non-party caretaker government (CG) issue, Mahi said, a steel-solid unity will be waged forcing the government to hold the next general election under the non-party CG oversight.
Responding to a query, he said, political distance between BNP and BDB is still prevailing but effort is going on to minimise the aloofness on political ground.
“I had talks with BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir recently and got positive response in this regard,” he said.
The party spokesperson said, his party is always against politics of vengeance and confrontation but believes in protest programmes like hartal in a peaceful manner.
Claiming BDB as pro-Liberation forces, he said, they want holding of the trial of war crimes committed against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
“If detained leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, a political component of BNP-led 18-party alliance, are proved guilty for committing war crimes, The party may be banned on legal ground,” he added.
It may be pointed out that Chowdhury held a meeting with BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office on Saturday night.
