Bangladesh Bank on Thursday asked the scheduled banks to take measures to eliminate risks at the locations of automated teller machines and point-of-sales so that the clients could conduct the transactions securely. To this end, the BB issued a circular to the managing directors and chief executive officers of all banks asking them to ensure security at the automated teller machine booths and to launch awareness campaigns about the fraudulent acts through the ATM and POS machines.
The BB also asked the banks to keep security guards at the ATM booths round the clock.
Besides, the respective bank will have to inform its guard over the phone when the bank’s official will set new machine or repair old machine.
The official concerned of a bank, who is assigned to monitor the ATM transactions, will have to be present at the ATM booth to verify his or her official, who will set new machine or repair the old machine, if required, the BB circular said.
The BB asked the banks to set up a dedicated help desk to monitor the ATM transactions so that the assigned officials could resolve the transaction –related disputes of the clients immediately.
The country’s banking sector has recently observed that some frauds had kept electronic devices inside the ATMs to get confidential information of the credit and debit cards of the clients, a BB official told New Age.
After collecting the information from the credit and debit cards, they applied for duplicate cards to the banks concerned on behalf of the clients.
The cheaters then embezzled a large amount of money from the ATMs using the fake cards.
Under the circumstances, the BB issued the circular to the banks asking them to take measures in mitigating the risks regarding transactions made using cards, he said.
The BB circular asked the banks to publish advertisements in print and electronic media about the probable fraudulent acts at the ATM booths and POS locations in a bid to creating awareness among the clients.
The banks have also been asked to display posters at a visible spot inside the ATM booths that will tell the clients how to use the machine easily and that what should be done to keep their information secured.
