Jute farmers of Jhenaidah are enjoying an upbeat year as jute fibres are being sold at better prices this year in the district.
Better yield and price have made the farmers happy. Jute sticks are also being sold at good prices, farmers said.
At different markets of the district a maund (a maund equals to 37.32kg) of jute fibres is being sold at between Tk 1,800 and Tk 2,500.
Abul Hossain, a farmer of village Gobingapur under Sailkupa upazila, said he got Tk 2,450 selling one maund of fibres at Langalbandh Bazar on Thursday. He sold the same amount of jute fibres at Tk 850 last year, he said.
Another farmer Sushanta Mandal of village Badalsho sold two maunds of the fibres at Tk 2,350 at the same market on the day.
‘I have brought more land under jute farming this year as I have realised that the emphasis given by the government on the product last year would put a positive impact on its prices,’ said Sushanta.
Jute farmer Islam Biswas said he was very enthusiastic when he managed to sell jute fibres and jute sticks produced on his three bighas of land at Tk 92,000.
Ahmed Hossain, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Jhenaidah, said, ‘Farmers in the district have got better harvest this year.’
The government initiatives aiming at increasing dependency on jute goods have encouraged the farmers, the deputy director said.
