Mohammedan defender Asaduzzaman Chandan escaped with a light punishment on Sunday, despite publicly assaulting two Pakistani players during a Dhaka Premier League hockey match.
Chandan beat Bangladesh Sporting Club’s Pakistani players Siraj Ali and Sahbaz Ali mercilessly during their Saturday’s match and Bangladesh Hockey Federation only suspended him for two matches for the serious disciplinary breach.
He was suspended for one match anyway as the defender received a red card for the offence. It means he will effectively serve one match ban against Railway Sports and Recreation Club.
BHF’s league committee on Sunday also warned three other Mohammedan players – Russell Mahmud Jimmy and two goalkeepers Zahid Hossain and Russell Khan Bappi – for their involvement in that incident.
Officials said they had to give Chandan light punishment in order to keep the ball rolling in the league.
‘We agree his offence is serious,’ said league committee member Shafayet Hossain Dalim. ‘A one-year suspension would have been the appropriate punishment. But we had to remain flexible considering the future of the league.’
BHF also banned Wari Club official Naziur Islam Nazu for his unruly behaviour during their match against Mariners Young Club.
Meanwhile, Usha Krira Chakra regained the lead of the points table with a comfortable 6-1 victory over Azad Sporting Club on Sunday.
In the day’s other match, Dhaka Wanderers Club thrashed Railway SC 5-0.
