Bill Gates has always been an authoritative voice when it comes to technology and advances in the future of society, of which he tries to make predictions about the next steps that will mark a period of before and after in our lives.
In addition, the founder of Microsoft has also become famous for his predictions. For example, in 2015 he guessed the arrival of the coronavirus when he said that the next global catastrophe would be “an epidemic”.
Now he has taken a stab at trying to predict the future and has opined that the next technological breakthrough that will change society will be autonomous vehicles.
“We are in the early days of the autonomous era. I can’t wait to see the new possibilities,” Gates said. For him, “we are close to the turning point” with this breakthrough.
Bill Gates spoke about Artificial Intelligence and predicted that there will be “a turning point” in the creation of autonomous vehicles. “Autonomous cars will allow the driver to take his hands off the wheel and let the system drive in certain circumstances,” Gates predicted.
For the entrepreneur, “they are getting to the point where almost all the required technology has been invented. Now, the focus is on refining the algorithms and perfecting the engineering”. Gates compares this technology in vehicles to the change that computers once brought to office work and that will cause a “rethinking” in driving systems.
The changes, according to the tycoon, will be made gradually. He believes that vehicles with passengers will be the last to use it: “Long-distance transport will probably be the first sector, followed by delivery,” he said. “Car rental companies lose a lot of money every year due to accidents caused by drivers. So they are eager to switch to autonomous fleets that are less accident-prone,” he noted.
Finally, he said, “Automated vehicles will end up being cheaper than regular vehicles. And if, like me, you commute by car, think of the time you waste driving.”
