BKSP’s Ariful Islam Orange and Irin Akhter retained the youth 100 meter sprint gold medal in the second and final day of the 29th National Junior (Age Level) Athletics Championship on Monday.
BKSP finished top of the medals tally with 20 golds while
Narail district came second with three gold medals.Orange, the standard 12 student of BKSP, clinched the third gold medal
in a row in the 100 meter event by beating Abu Abdullah of Natore district while Robiul Hasan of Comilla district claimed bronze.
The 19-year old Orange failed to participate in the recently concluded eighth Bangladesh Games due to an injury and is now trying to recover himself.
‘I was confident that I would retain the gold medal and lastly I did it. Now my target is to earn success from the senior and international meets,’ said Orange, who also won the long jump event with a new record.
‘Mainly I am a long jumper and I wish to build up myself as the
country’s best long jumper and I also want to achieve the top spot of the 100 meter sprint consistently,’ he added.
Meanwhile, BKSP’s Irin Akhter sealed the 100 meter gold medal by overcoming her fellow teammate Tamanna Akter while Sohagi Akter of Narayanganj district confirmed the bronze medal.
Irin, who reads in standard 11, also won the high jump gold medal.
She informed that she chose athletics after receiving backing from her father, Alauddin. She has been taking part in the junior meet since 2008.
Irin now wants to attain the South Asian Games gold medal and wishes to sprint with the nation’s fastest woman Nazmunnahar Beauty, who also happens to be her idol.
‘I am always following Beauty apu and I want to sprint with her. Now I want to win the SA Games sprint by beating all the best athletes in this region,’ she said.
Another BKSP athlete, Ashik Kumar won
the 200 meter crown. Abdullah Al Maruf of Feni district and Irfan Ali of Lalmonirhat district finished second and third respectively.
The gold medal winner of the girl’s 100 meter sprint, Aysha
Siddika of BKSP also won the 200 meter sprint while Tanzila Khatun of BKSP and Jarifa Khatun of Khulna district claimed the silver and bronze medal respectively.
