Grassroots leaders gathered in headquarters for soul-searching

BNP on Tuesday kick-started a month-long reorganizing process of the former ruling party that went haywire after the 1/11 onslaught, gathering upazila, thana and pourshava-level leaders in the headquarters for a soul-searching.
The bottom-up recasting process began through interviewing presidents, general secretaries and organizing secretaries or convenors and joint convenors of the local units. To start with, leaders of eight upazilas of Sirajganj district met with designated central leaders at the BNP central office at Nayapaltan in the city at 11 am.
BNP joint secretary general Mirza Abbas and organizing secretary Amanullah Aman, who have been assigned to heal the hiccups of grassroots-level organizations of Rajshahi division, took their interviews.
Talking to reporters, Rajshahi division team leader Mirza Abbas said restructuring the organization is taking place to bring it back to previous position which was so organized.
“Because,” he said, “as part of a conspiracy attempt was made to destroy the BNP after 1/11. As a result, tsunami-like disaster struck top-to-bottom leaders of BNP across the country.”
He reiterated party view that 11 January had been created for long days under a preplanned conspiracy to destroy BNP.
And the changeover drove a wedge between reformists and loyalists to the party chief, ex-PM Khaleda Zia, amid a cleanup drive launched by the military-backed interim regime that had thrown many leaders of BNP and other major parties behind bars on graft charges.
Amanullah Aman said various organizational affairs are being asked about and opinions are being taken both orally and in writing from the grassroots-level interviewees.
The interviewees are being supplied forms to fill in and submit to the team on a specified date under the rectification process.
Earlier on Sunday, the national standing committee of BNP in a meeting had decided to begin the process of recasting the organization from grassroots level to strengthen the party, which sank deep down to the level of bagging only 30 MPs at the polls.
The standing committee formed two-member six teams, one each for six divisions, each headed by a Joint secretary general, for reviewing and gathering information of organizational situation at ground level.
The teams have been asked to submit review reports to the standing committee by February 28.
Joint Secretary general Abduallah Al Noman took interview of upazila, thana and pourashava unit presidents, general sectaries and organizing secretaries of Dhaka division from 4pm on Tuesday.
The interview of all upazila, thana and pourashava units of BNP of Magura district under Khulna division would be held at the party’s central office at 11am today (Wednesday).
Khulna division team leader Selima Rahman and member-secretary M Shajahan will take the interviews.
