BNP man killed in Ctg; 25 hurt in Natore
Star Report
A pro-BNP labourer was killed in Chittagong city Saturday night while at least 25 people were injured in a clash between the supporters of Awami League (AL) and BNP in Lalpur upazila of Natore yesterday.
Our correspondent in Chittagong reports: Labourer Khokan Majhi, 37, a Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal activist and joint convenor of the election committee of BNP candidate Abdullah Al Noman, was beaten to death at Chhotopul of Halishahar in the port city.
Local BNP leaders blamed AL cadres for the killing but police did not find any political link with the murder.
Sub-inspector Humayun Kabir, also the investigation officer, suspected that the killing might be a result of dispute between the rival workers centring payment and supply of day labourers.
Khokan, son of Mokter Mridha, hailed from Moralganj upazila under Bagerhat and supplied construction workers.
Police said some workers led by Jasim, leader of a construction association, called Khokan out of his residence in Boropul area around 10:00pm Saturday, took him to nearby Badsha Mia brickfield at Chhotopul and beat him up with rods and sticks.
Seriously injured Khokan was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where the attending doctors declared him dead.
Police arrested three construction-workers — Bellal Sheikh, Murad and Md Idris — from different places of Boropul and Chhotopul early yesterday.
When contacted, Noman, now in the capital, said Khokan’s father Mokter told him over telephone that some Jubo League cadres were demanding Tk 5 lakh from his son in last few days and threatened to kill him if their demand is not met. He demanded exemplary punishment to the culprits.
BNP Halishahar unit will stage a demonstration in the locality protesting the killing.
A report from Natore says at least 25 people were injured in a clash between AL and BNP over taking control of shops at Beelmaria Bazar in Lalpur upazila.
Of the injured, Gias Sarder, 50, Abu Hanif, 42, Sherekul, 42, and Altaf Hossain, 51, were admitted to Lalpur Hospital in a critical condition.
In another incident in Jessore on Friday, a group of AL activists allegedly severed the tongue of a BNP supporter at Balia Vekutia village on the outskirts of the district town.
The victim was identified as Mozahar Ali. His wife Nurjahan Begum filed a case with local police station.
In the case statement, she alleged that a group of eight to 10 AL activists led by Shahabul stormed into their house and forcibly took her husband to a nearby shop as he cast his vote for BNP candidate in the December 29 national polls, reports UNB.
She said the unruly AL men later tortured him and cut off his tongue at one stage in broad daylight. Mozahar was admitted to Jessore hospital in a critical condition.
