The Bangladesh Nationalist Party will dissolve all the committees of all tiers of the organisation and its associate bodies from the grassroots level and reorganise them through elections.
The party chief, Khaleda Zia, announced the decision in the aftermath of the party’s election debacle.
‘We will dissolve all the committees of the party and its fronts and
reconstitute them through elections at grassroots level,’ Khaleda said while exchanging views with Comilla district unit leaders of the party at Comilla Circuit House.
The district leaders demanded formation of a new committee of the unit after the activists openly censured the district leadership for indulging in activities detrimental to the party’s interest.
AS the district unit Chhatra Dal proposed that the defeated candidate for Comilla 1 constituency in the December 29 polls be made the leader of the district committee, representatives of other fronts protested in a chorus. The meeting plunged in chaos as rival groups were shouting at each other in presence of Khaleda Zia prompting the Special Security Force to encircle her on security grounds.
Party standing committee member Khandker Mosharraf Hossain calmed the angry activists.
Khaleda said that people had voted for her party’s symbol ‘paddy sheaf’ but the result was changed. ‘There is no reason for frustration… Despite all adversities, the number of votes we polled proved that the people are with us’, she told her activists.
‘The support we received from the voters was tremendous in view of the fact that we had just two weeks [for campaigns] and a disorganised party’, she said. ‘Now we need to reorganise and unite and work with the people. By the grace of Allah we will be in power the next time.’
Khaleda also asked the activists to work for the party candidates in upazila polls.
Tenures of almost all committees, excluding the national standing committee, of the party have already expired as the party did not hold elections to the committees in last two years. The tenures of all committees are generally two years.
The party had held its last central council session 15 years ago, in 1993 at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital, although, according to its constitution it is supposed to hold council session every two years.
The party had held a representatives’ meeting with the participation of the members of the national executive committee in 2006.
