Bangladesh Nationalist Party wants to build a safe and secure Bangladesh, its acting chairman Tarique Rahman said on Thursday.
Addressing a public reception, he said the party envisions a country that reflects the dreams of a mother.
Together, we will build a Bangladesh that every mother dreams of. That is, we want to build a safe Bangladesh—where every woman, man or child can leave home safely and, return home safely,’ Tarique said.
He made the remarks while speaking at a mass reception held in the 300 Feet area of Purbachal.
Earlier, at about 3:50pm, Tarique Rahman arrived at the reception venue, where the 300 Feet Road, also known as the July 36 Expressway, and surrounding areas became lively with slogans from party leaders, activists and supporters.
The area witnessed scenes of great excitement as he took to the stage and waved in response to greetings and expressions of goodwill from the crowd.
In his speech, Tarique said that just as the people of the country achieved independence in 1971, people from all walks of life came together in 2024 to protect Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.
He said that the people of Bangladesh now want to regain their right to speak freely and restore their democratic rights.
Tarique reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at approximately 11:40am on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from London.
From the early hours of the morning, massive crowds gathered at the reception site in the capital’s Bashundhara area.
By 10:00am, the 300 Feet Road and surrounding neighbourhoods were packed with supporters, leaving little space to stand in adjacent areas.
Members of the security forces were deployed across the area to maintain order.
Large screens installed on and around the stage showed documentaries on BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman, and the July uprising.
Supporters continued to pour in from both the western and eastern highways, with the flow of people showing no sign of slowing.
Processions of BNP leaders and activists arrived from various points including the airport, Purbachal, Banani and the Jamuna Future Park area, chanting slogans and waving party flags as they made their way towards the reception venue.
The atmosphere along the 300 Feet Road was festive, with slogans echoing throughout the area.
Processions, some accompanied by band music, added to the celebratory mood as party supporters welcomed Tarique Rahman back to the country.
