10 lakh tonnes of Boro rice to be collected this season
The government on Thursday fixed the procurement price of per kilogram Boro rice at Tk 31. The newly fixed price is Tk 2 up from the last season’s price, food minister Qumrul Islam told reporters after a meeting with the national food committee at the secretariat. He said production cost of per kg Boro paddy was calculated at Tk 17.50 and rice at Tk 26.50. The government was determined to ensure fair price of rice for the benefit of the farmers, he said.
The meeting attended, among others, by finance minister AMA Muhith, agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury and commerce minister Tofail Ahmed also decided to buy 10 lakh metric tonnes of Boro rice this season.
The procurement will begin from next month.
Qumrul said the production of Boro, main staple, was estimated at 1.89 crore tonnes.
The committee also fixed prices and quantity of the non-boiled rice, Boro paddy and wheat.
It decided to procure 1 lakh tonnes of non-boiled rice at the rate of Tk 30 per kg, 1.5 lakh tonne of Boro paddy at the rate of Tk 20 per kg, Tk 1.5 up from the last season’s price and 1.5 lakh tonnes of wheat the rate Tk 27 per kg.
The meeting expressed satisfaction at the overall food situation in the country. The meeting was told that 3.3 lakh tonnes of Aman rice was procured which is slightly higher than the target.
It was observed in the meeting that the price of rice in the international market was falling.
