Low quality of education frustrates students
The number of coaching centres in our country has increased rapidly like mushrooms. Most of the coaching centres try to influence the students claiming to be the best. The HSC exam will be over very soon. At this time these coaching centres try to attract students through various leaflets.
Students found taking coaching from these coaching centers told this correspondent that the teaching quality of the coaching centers is substandard.
Raman Sarkar, a student who got himself admitted to Saifur’s coaching centers Panthapath branch said, “I was admitted here by my parents and I am taking MBA coaching with a hope to get chance in Dhaka University. But now I am really frustrated with the teaching quality.”
He alleged that the teachers of this well-known coaching center are not well trained and they (teachers) remain absent in the classes.
When asked about the students’ allegations of providing substandard teaching, an official of Saifur’s said, “We are trying our level best to provide quality education but if the students are not attentive to their studies how will they be able to reach their goal.” He claimed that they are paying taxes to the government regularly.
Talking to this correspondent, Selim Khan, a teacher of a city’s government college said, “Coaching business has become the easiest way of making money in a very short time for some people. Like private university owners, the coaching centre moderators have the gift of the gab. They convince the students in such a way that the students who pass the HSC think that there is no other way to get admitted to the university except through coaching and the help of the guide and materials given by the moderators. They publish photos and interviews of students in their magazines, but actually those are not students at all. In their annual program, they invite those students who get a chance and entice them to publish their photos and interviews.”
He said the government should regularly oversee the activities of the coaching centers. He also pointed out that there were allegations of question paper leakage against some of these coaching centres.
Some guardians alleged that the standard of education has deteriorated significantly as the teachers are not sincere in classroom teaching. They also said coaching centres that have mushroomed in various parts of the country mostly lack quality teachings.
Some coaching centers like MENTORS, Saint Jones entice the commerce and arts students to take preparation for IBA exam, SAT, IELTS, etc. The commerce and arts students are usually weak in mathematical aptitude, so it becomes difficult for them to get prepared in a few months and to get chance into IBA without some sort of guidance.
Besides, most of the coaching centers are doing business without being registered with the government, so the government is losing a huge amount of taxes every year.
While visiting the city’s some most popular university admission coaching centers such as UCC, Positron etc, it was found that a large number of students have been admitted into these coaching centers while their HSC exams are yet to be finished.
“My dream is to get chance in Dhaka University and I strongly believe that if I take coaching properly from here, I will be able to get chance in DU,” said Nazmul Ahsan a HSC examinee who came to UCC Farmgate branch to get admitted.
