Broiler price shoots up in capital

Egg, vegetables become dearer
The price of broiler chicken shot up on the retail market in the capital city over the week ending Friday. The prices of egg and some of the vegetables also increased on the market.
Traders said the prices increased due to supply shortage.
The price of broiler increased by Tk 30 a kg and was selling at Tk 165 to Tk 170 a kg on Friday.
Shohagh Hossain, a trader of Karwan Bazar kitchen market, told New Age that there was a shortage of supply as the production of broiler had decreased due to cold weather.
He also said the price would remain high for the next few weeks as during the winter the broiler production usually decreased.
The price of egg increased by Tk 2 a hali (four pieces) and was selling at Tk 38 a hali on the day.
Like the previous week vegetables remained pricey and the prices of some of the items marked fresh rise in the city’s retail markets over the week.
Kazi Mamunur Rashid, a businessman, who came to city’s Shantinagar kitchen market, told New Age on Friday that the vegetables were very costly and it was difficult to afford for the low-income group.
He alleged that the traders were increasing prices at their will as there was no monitoring on the market.
The prices of aubergine, bean and bitter gourd still remained high and were selling at Tk 60 to Tk 80 a kg, Tk 40 to Tk 60 a kg and Tk 60 to Tk 70 a kg respectively on Friday.
The prices of radish, carrot, turnip, cucumber and spinach increased by Tk 5 a kg over the week.
Radish was selling at Tk 30 a kg, carrot at Tk 40 a kg, turnip at Tk 35 a kg, cucumber at Tk 40 a kg and spinach at Tk 40 a kg at the Rampura kitchen market on Friday.
The prices cauliflower and cabbage increased by Tk 5 a piece and were retailing at Tk 35 a piece and Tk 30 a piece respectively on the capital’s kitchen markets.
The price of local ripe tomato decreased by Tk 10 a kg and was selling at Tk 80 a kg while green tomato was selling at Tk 50 a kg on the day.
The price of papaya increased by Tk 5 a kg over the week and was retailing at Tk 25 a kg on Friday.
The price of green chilli remained unchanged and was retailing at Tk 80 a kg on the day.
Masudur Rahman, a retailer at Karwan Bazar, said the retail prices of vegetables increased a bit as the wholesalers increased the prices.
He also said there was a supply shortage of vegetables like aubergine and gourd on the market.
The price of onion remained unchanged over the week. The local variety of onion was selling at Tk 75 a kg while the just-harvested local onion was selling at Tk 45 a kg and imported onion at Tk 40 a kg on Friday.
The prices of the local varieties of garlic and ginger remained unchanged and the commodities were retailing at Tk 60 a kg and Tk 100 a kg respectively.

The price of potato remained unchanged and was selling at Tk 25 a kg over the week.
Unpacked soya bean and super palm oil, like the previous week, were retailing at Tk 130 a kg and Tk 95 a kg respectively while each five-litre bottle of soya bean oil was selling at Tk 655 to Tk 665 on the day.
The price of fish remained steady over the week. Rohita was retailing at Tk 260 to Tk 420 a kg, katla at Tk 200 to Tk 300 a kg, pangas at Tk 120 to Tk 230 a kg and tilapia at Tk 110 to Tk 140 a kg, depending on their size and quality, on Friday.
The prices of beef and mutton remained stable and were retailing at Tk 280 a kg and Tk 425 a kg respectively on the day.
Local red lentil price remained high and was retailing at Tk 140 a kg while the imported red lentil was selling at Tk 80 a kg on Friday.
The price of sugar remained unchanged and was selling at Tk 50 to Tk 52 a kg.
