Left-leaning Bangladesh Students Union celebrates its 61st founding anniversary today.
The BSU, that played a vital role in all democratic and student movements and the independence war in 1971, would organise a student rally and bring out a procession in the capital, carrying the national and organisation flags, banners and placards.A reunion of former leaders and activists of the organisation will be held in the afternoon near DU central library.
BSU was founded on April 26, in 1952. The
BSU played a vital role in assisting national political parties to win the United Front elections in 1954, organising movements against the National Education Commission (Hamidur Rahman Education Commission) report in 1962, Six-Point Movement in 1966, 11-Point Movement and mass uprising in 1969 and in the independence war where the BSU had operated its own guerrilla units.
The BSU also played a vital role during students’ movement against the military dictator HM Ershad in the 1980s, Shamsunnar Hall Movement in 2002, movement in 2008 for the release of teachers and students arrested over the August 20-22, 2007 student protests and on going Shahbagh protest.
