Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission on Thursday sought public opinion on draft National Telecommunication Consumer Protection Guideline to ensure that the consumers’ privacy is being protected and the operators are maintaining commercial ethics.
The commission has made the draft public and people can submit their suggestions on the draft by February 15.
The draft guideline was aimed to protect the privacy of mobile phone users, streamline tele-marketing services through SMS and ensure efficient complaint handling.
Under the guideline, the privacy of the subscribers would be legally protected and using their call records without the consent of the authorities concerned would be prevented.
The guideline would also empower the subscribers to cancel any promotional or commercial offer through SMS in a bid to streamline tele-marketing, which the commission described a ‘hazard’ for the users.
The BTRC would open a new unit for handling consumer complaints under a unique coding mechanism to track the status of a complaint filed by a subscriber, the guideline said.
The mobile phone operators will have to have dedicated people to provide helpline services and handle customer complaints.
The operators must also have a dedicated webpage and email address where the subscribers can file complaints.
