Internet Content Filtering
BTRC to form committee to speed up solution purchase
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission is going to form a committee with a view to purchasing solution for content filtering on the internet, said officials.
The telecom regulator on Sunday sent letters to Bangladesh Computer Council, Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited and some other agencies for providing the names of their representatives for the committee, they said.
‘We have decided to form the committee to speed up the process to buy the content filtering solution. We hope to complete the process soon,’ a BTRC official told New Age on Monday.
The BTRC has shortlisted seven firms to purchase software and equipment for filtering different content on the internet that can hurt people’s religious beliefs or affect national security.
The telecom regulator’s move came after some anti-Islamic content in some blogs were brought into public attention by media which instigated violence across the country, they said.
Based on an expression of interest issued in April 2013 the BTRC shortlisted the seven firms — Base Technologies, Perky Global, Ezzy Communication, Panacea System, Infra Builders, IT Consultant Ltd and Semptian International — for the job.
The selected firms will set up software at International Internet Gateways to filter those content following recommendations of the authorities concerned.
They said the software solution would handle traffic through the IIG operators for this purpose without blocking normal functioning of the internet.
After the system comes into operation the BTRC will be able to
filter specific content of a web site if it is harmful and that will help other users carry their regular works, the officials said.
