Bunan Theatre demonstrated their support for the children of sex workers through staging of its popular production Nakshi Kanthar Maath at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Friday evening. All funds accumulated through ticket selling of the show will be used by the troupe to purchase books and clothes for 35 children of sex workers.
Adapted and directed by Anan Zaman, the play is an adaptation of the 1928 classic verse drama Nakshi Kanthar Math (Field of the Embroidered Quilt) by poet Jasimuddin. The simple and lyrical account of a the struggle of a rural couple in a tumultuous relationship is what constitutes the verse narrative.
The story of the rural boy Rupai and rural girl Saju is, in effect, not that unknown to the urban audience; which is why it is easier for the audience to relate to the plot. What makes the plot even more engaging is the universal appeal of the narrative’s subject of love and loss.
The troupe also applied the folk form known as Ghatu Gaan, coupled with narration and stylised acting to stage Nakshi Kanthar Math. In Ghatu style, a chorus, led by a young lad dressed as a girl, reveals the plot through songs, narrations and acting.
