Burglars have made away with Tk 16.4 crore from the volt of a Sonali Bank branch in Kishoreganj town, bank officials said yesterday.
Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan, Manager of Isha Kha Road branch of the bank, said the miscreants dug a passageway into the vault of the bank sometime Friday and Saturday and took away the money. “A total of Tk 16.40 crore is missing from the vault,” he said.
This is the highest amount of money looted from a bank in recent history.
Witnesses said the tunnel was found to have been dug from an adjacent building. But how the incident took place remains a mystery as a police camp is located in the basement of the building that houses the bank branch.
Police cordoned off the bank after hearing the news.
Talking to The Independent, Kishoreganj police superintendent Anwar Hossain Khan, however, told The Independent in the evening that bank officials were mentioning several figures of the looted amount
that ranges between Tk 10 crore and Tk 14.9 crore.
About the possible involvement of the bank staff and police personnel, Anwar said, “We are investigating the incident keeping all aspects in mind, but at the moment we cannot comment on the issue.”
He said eight people — seven policemen and a guard-in-charge —have been suspended in connection with the incident.
The police are trying to arrest Shohel, a tenant of the adjacent building from where the passageway started, he added.
“An expert team of the CID is coming to collect necessary evidence,” the SP said.
