A businessman was hacked to death at Sagordi in the Barisal city early Monday for demanding dues.
The victim was identified as Altaf Hossain Haoladar alias Sunu Haoladar, 35, a rice-mill owner and son of Kanchan Haoladar and cousin of ward 24 councillor Firoz Ahmed.
Businessmen of Sagordi Bazaar on Monday observed half-day shutdown protesting at the killing and demanding capital punishment of the killer.
Family members and witnesses said Sunu demanded Tk 1,100 from green-coconut seller and a distant relative, Sohel Haoladar, son of Toiab Ali Haoladar of the area, which was due.
After altercation, Sohel hacked Sunu with a sharp weapon used for cutting green-coconut at about 8:00pm Sunday night.
Sunu was rushed to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital and died from his injuries there early Monday, told Nazmul Huda, president of Sagordi Bazaar Khudra Bebsayee Samity.
Zahidul Islam, assistant register of SBCH surgery unit, said Sunu died from over-bleeding.
Police sent the body to SBMCH morgue and detained mother and maternal aunt of the absconding killer for interrogation, said Shakhawat Hossain, Kotwali police station in-charge.
Agitated local people tried to ransack and torch the house of the killer, he added.
Police were trying to nab the killer and preparation of lodging a murder case was still going on, the OC said.
