A daylong colorful butterfly fair will be held on Jahangirnagar University campus tomorrow amid enthusiasm and festivity. With the slogan ‘Urley Akashe Prajapati, Prakriti Pay Natun Gati’, JU zoology department will arrange the fair for the fourth time in association with the Prakriti O Jiban Foundation. The fair convener, Professor Monwar Hosaain, in a press conference on Wednesday hoped that event would be successful through the cooperation from all concerned.
‘The fair aims to promote the importance of butterflies in maintaining the ecological balance,’ the convener said.
A total of 125 species of living butterflies will be displayed in the fair including two new species — Plains Blue Royal and Dusky Part wing — discovered by Professor Monwar Hossain.
A total of 72 species of butterfly have been discovered from JU so far which is a unique achievement of the university.
The daylong fair includes children’s art competition on nature and butterfly, photography competition on butterfly, displaying living butterfly, kite flying, debate competition, prize distributing programme of the competitions, cultural events and documentary shows on butterfly.
The interested participants of the competitions are asked to issue registration by 9:30am on the day.
Some species to be displayed in the fair include Plain Tiger, Common Crow, Plum Judy, Dingy Bush brown, Common Duffer, Ape Fly, Pea Blue, Tiny Grass Blue, Oak Blue, Common Sailor, Common Rose, Blue Mormon, Striped Albatross, Mottled Emigrant, Common Grass Yellow, Monkey Puzzle, Blue Pansy and Painted Lady.
A book on butterfly will also be launched on the fair.
Transport services will be provided from Shabagh to campus on 8:30am for the participants, guests and visitors.
