Climate Strategy
Call for proper implementation
The country’s future depends on how effectively the government implement the climate change strategy and action plan, experts said yesterday, emphasising proper research to face the challenge.
Speaking at a climate conference, they blamed lacks of political will and coordination among ministries for Bangladesh’s lagging behind in climate strategy implementation.
Dr Saleemul Haq, senior fellow of the International Institute for Environmental and Development (IIED), said the government has to show political will to implement climate strategy.
South Asia can do far better in addressing climate issues than the region is doing currently, he said, adding that there are good wills to work on climate change in non-government organisations (NGO) sector.
“But it has not transformed into a political will yet in Bangladesh”, he said.
Prof Ainun Nishat, vice-chancellor of Brac University, also addressed the inaugural session of the conference titled “Water, wave and weather: Climate change and the future of South Asia”.
The two-day conference, sponsored by American Centre of Bangladesh Studies, began at Brac Centre Inn in the city yesterday.
Khusi Kabir, executive director of Nijera Kari, moderated the first session.
