The government should implement the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women for ensuring development of the country’s women.
The call was made at a news briefing organised by Barendra Unnayan Prachesta, a non-governmental organisation in Rajshahi, on Sunday to mark 100 years of International Women’s Day to be observed today.
Tahmina Akhter Shilpi, a campaign facilitator, read out a written statement at the briefing held at the organisation’s gender and development resource centre in the Rajshahi city.
Among others, director of the organisation Fayazullah Chowdhury, coordinator Rashed Ibne Obayed and campaign facilitator Hafiz Uddin Pintu were present on the occasion.
The statement said the existing ‘family laws’ were not enough to eliminate discrimination against women. They have to face discrimination in marriage, divorce, guardianship of their children and ownership due to the existing family laws, it added.
The statement also stated that the citizenship laws of the country were discriminatory.
At the briefing, the speakers demanded implementation of the National Women Development Policy and formulation of new women-friendly citizenship laws, oppression prevention laws and family laws to uphold the rights of women.
They also called for a common family law and equal rights to end discrimination and violence against women.
The speakers observed that the fundamentalists were very much active in the society and due to their activeness the women development policy was yet to be implemented.
On equal rights, Fayazullah Chowdhury said, ‘The government should ensure equal rights in property inheritance by forming common family law. Otherwise, we will fail to eliminate women repression in society.’
He also called on people from all walks of life to wage a united movement to stop violence against women and ensure equal wages as well as rights.
To mark International Women’s Day, the organisation has chalked out 20-day long different programmes like rally, meeting, coordination meeting and door to door campaign in the city and upazilas.
