50pc seat demanded for Sylhet students
People of Sylhet on Monday demanded immediate step to cancel the joint initiative to take admission tests simultaneously on Shahjalal University of Science and Technology campus and Jessore University of Science and Technology campus with the same question paper.
They also demanded 50 per cent of the seats reserved for students of the Sylhet region.
The demands were made during a meeting held with the SUST vice-chancellor, Aminul Haque Bhuiyan, at his office in the afternoon, sources present at the meeting said.
Delegates of different professions, including people’s representatives, academics and politicians, participated in the meeting to press for the demands, the campus sources said.
Among others, Sylhet city mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, also central executive council member of the main opposition BNP, and sadar upazila chairman Ashfaq Ahmad, also a local leader of the ruling Awami League, were in the team, the sources said.
SUST vice-chancellor in the meeting said he would inform the university admission committee of the demands and developments in this regard.
Meanwhile, a group of students under banner of Sylhet Students Interest Protection Committee gave a 24-hour ultimatum to scrap the joint move for taking intake tests of SUST and JUST.
At a rally they threatened to resist the admission tests scheduled for November 30 if their demand was not met within a day next.
The SUST and JUST authorities this year signed an agreement to hold the admission tests on both of university campuses on November 30 with a same question paper, sources in the SUST administration said.
According to the agreement, the candidates who would come out successful in the tests will have the option to choose any of the two campuses to study, the sources said.
