The Forest Department will reward those who help catch wildlife traffickers and poachers in the Sundarbans, especially Bengal Tigers.
The decision came in the wake of the recent rescue of a seriously injured tiger by the Forest Department in the Sundarbans. The tiger fell in a trap set by poachers.
“We have held meetings with local villagers and told them they will be rewarded if they can catch the poachers ,” said M Jahidul Kabir, a divisional forest officer of Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division, Khulna.
Amir Hossain Chowdhoury, a forest official (Sundarbans East Zone), said members of Forest Department conducted drives in the Sundarbans since Saturday to catch the traffickers, but none could be apprehended still Sunday evening.
The Forest Department sent the tiger to the Bangabandhu Safari Park in Gazipur. An eight-member medical team of the Veterinary Department at the Bangladesh Agriculture University conducted surgery in leg of the injured tiger on Sunday.
“The physicians cut off the syntactic rope from the leg of the tiger and now it feels well. The team led by Dr Mizanur Rahman is looking after the sick tiger,” chief conservator of forest Tapan Kumar Dey told UNB.
