The Chittagong City Corporation drew up a budget of Tk 741.51 crore for 2010-11 fiscal year with a surplus of Tk 1.78 crore and without imposing new tax on city dwellers on Thursday The CCC Mayor M Manjur Alam announced the budget at a general meeting at the corporation auditorium Thursday noon when a revised budget of Tk 294.28 crore was also approved for the financial year 2009-10.
The proposed budget showed an estimated expenditure of Tk 739.73 crore, including Tk 359.19 crore for development activities, Tk 97.38 crore for salaries and allowances, Tk 85.35 crore for outstanding payment, Tk 22.55 crore for the operational and maintenance activities, Tk 26.95 crore for the utility services, Tk 5.4 crore for rents and taxes and Tk 4.86 crore for welfare activities.
The proposed budget showed an estimated income of Tk 298.05 crore from outstanding taxes, Tk 105.01 crore from current taxes, Tk 45.78 crore from other taxes, Tk 17.67 crore from different fees, Tk 36.97 crore from rents of different installations and Tk 200.99 crore from development donations.
The mayor said they prioritised the water logging in the city and they would soon float a tender of Tk 50 crore to solve the problem.
He also said they had launched a new wing alongside forming a standing committee to solve water-logging by this time and the city corporation authorities would sign contact with an institute to design sluice gates for the Chaktai Canal and Mohesh Canal in the city.
‘We should engage all out efforts for the development of the city in systematic way,’ the mayor said adding that he would not show any political consideration in conducting corporation activities.
The councillors of 41 wards, 14 female councillors and CCC officials were also present at the meeting that also elected a panel of mayors to run the CCC in absence of the mayor.
Ward councillors Mohammed Hossain, Jobaira Nargis Khan and Chowdhury Hasan Mohammed Hasni were elected panel mayors as 22 ward councillors, including eight females, vied for the posts.
According to the CCC sources, all the three panel mayors were belonging to the ruling Awami League while the city mayor was belonging to the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
