The ongoing renovation works at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium and the Fatullah stadium forced the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis to defer the Dhaka Premier League, which was scheduled to begin today.
The top domestic one-day competition may now begin on December 17, though the organisers are still unsure when the construction works will be finally completed.
‘We were told by the National Sports Council that Abacus, the firm which is installing the floodlights at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, will still need a week to fix lights at the venue. They have requested us to wait until December 20,’ said Quazi Ainul Islam, the coordinator of CCDM.
CCDM also blamed the NSC for not handing over the Fatullah stadium, another designated venue for the league. NSC was supposed to handover the venue on December 14, but Ainul said some construction works are still ongoing.
‘The bathroom has not completed and the
water supply line is also out of order. The players and officials of the clubs also refused to play because of the noise created by the renovation works,’ he said.
Ainul said their decision has no relation with the absence of national players, who were given a four-day rest after the Zimbabwe series.
The new date for the league is likely to be fixed at a meeting of the CCDM today.
