The English department of Independent University, Bangladesh organised a day-long programme celebrating 100th anniversary of Tagore’s winning of Nobel Prize in 1913 as the first non-European for his Gitanjali, an English collection of devotional poems.
Professor emeritus Anisuzzaman attended the programme as the chief guest and presented a speech describing the importance of English Gitanjali at the programme on the campus at Bashundhara Residential Area on Thursday, said a press release.
Dr Hafiza Nilofar Khan, head of English department, delivered the welcome speech. Among others, the vice chancellor professor M Omar Rahman; and dean of school of liberal arts and social sciences professor Zakir Hossain Raju also spoke on the occasion. Faculty members and students of the department presented Tagore song Alo amar alo in chorus.
They also took part in a reading session and a cultural programme at the event.
