According to Lloyd’s List, one of the oldest shipping periodicals in the world, the Chattogram port has advanced three spots to become the 64th busiest port among the top 100 container ports in the world in terms of yearly container transport in 2021.
The port occupied the 67th spot on the list in 2020. The most recent edition of Lloyd’s List One Hundred Ports was released on August 18, 2022.
The list shows that the Chattogram port handled 32,14,548 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in total in 2021, up from 28,39,977 TEUs the year before, representing a 13.2% increase in container handling year-on-year.
Secretary of Chattogram Port Authority Md Omar Faruk said, “It is possible as all stakeholders of the port are contributing to its progress. I sincerely thank everyone for this.” The position of Chattogram Port on Lloyd’s List will advance further, he added.
On the Lloyd’s List of busiest ports since 2014, Chattogram port has been steadily moving up the list.
In that year, it handled almost 1.6 million TEUs and came in at 87th place. However, in 2020, the port slipped nine spots, from 58th to 67th, on the list of the 100 busiest ports in the world in terms of container transport. The port moved up three levels once more this year.
In 2019, the port handled about 28.94 lakh TEUs of containers. The port handled 29,03,996 TEUs of containers in 2018, an 8.90% increase from 26,67,223 TEUs in 2017.
