The Department of Environment on Sunday conducted a five-hour drive and demolished five chicken and fish feed factories at Hazaribagh of the capital for using tannery wastes to produce chicken and fish feed in unhygienic way. During the drive, DoE sealed four industries for producing feeds in an unhygienic way by processing tannery wastes. DoE in a press release said that DoE sent notices to these factories but they overlooked the instruction.
Later, an enforcement team of DoE, led by its executive magistrate Md Shamsul Alam, conducted the drive.
They said the use of tannery wastes in poultry and fish feed poses serious health risk for consumers as the hazardous waste has the possibility of directly entering the food chain and consumption of tannery waste through fish and poultry might cause liver and kidney diseases, even cancer.
