Oral polio vaccines were administered to the children under five on Saturday with an aim to free the country from polio, a serious infectious disease that can cause permanent paralysis.
Due to the blockade programme, presence of children at vaccination centres was less than normal time, said health workers who administered vaccines to children at vaccination centres.
Expanded Programme on Immunisation program manager M Tajul Islam A Bari told New Age that they could know the immunisation coverage by this (Sunday) evening.
‘The centres will send us reports by mail, fax and telephone,’ he said, adding that they would calculate the figure after getting the reports.
‘However, we have not received any report on unwanted incident from anyplace due to the blockade programme which affects the campaign,’ he said.
The health secretary, MM Niazuddin, inaugurated the National Immunisation Day at Dhaka Shishu Hospital in the morning.
About six lakh health workers and volunteers administered oral polio vaccines at 130,000 centres across the country with a target to feed 2.20 crore children.
The health workers would visit door-to-door from Sunday to Thursday (except Dec 25) to find out if any child is left out of the immunisation coverage.
