New Long March
China moving fast to break unipolar world
The skeptics are now convinced that China rightly embarked on the second long march in the year 1978 after successfully blending socialist political system with market economy. The historic long march brought political independence for the Chinese people and the new China emerged in the year 1949. During the period between 1949 and the year 2009 there has been lot of ups and downs in the history of China. The great nation has saw the collapse of cultural revolution and resurgence of the economy under the open door policy. Today china is in the driving seat of the world economy having the gross domestic product of 4 trillion US dollars and per capita income of $4000. The foreign exchange reserve now stands at 1.8 trillion dollars and population of the country is 1.3 billion.Annual average growth rate over the last 30 years is 9 per cent.
The present political situation in China is stable. The communist party that rules the country ever since its independence has a membership strength of 70 million now. China started changing since the 11th congress of the communist party of China in late seventies after adoption of open door policy and ending the policy of eating from the big bowls. The open door policy allowed individual initiative in development and the state announced four modernization targets. The country sets the target of achieving the status of a developed country in the year 2050 by implementing the four modernization policy. But those who have seen China now are convinced that the country is now very close to world”s second largest economy. May be even before 2050 China will be the largest economy of the world having very strong political and military strength.
Already the Chinese people are very happy with the improvement of living standard following sustained economic growth and creation of adequate jobs. The youngsters have got the taste of decent living. They are now more outward looking. The young boys and girls are more fashion conscious and working people are happy. Sky scrappers are seen in plenty in every city and roads with scores of flyovers provide excellent communication network. The latest model luxury cars are filling the roads all over China that was once occupied by scores of bi-cycles.
China is now a over confident nation and people, especially, the youngsters are proud of successful holding of the Olympic games last year. The visitors like me who missed the Olympic event can now get the great feel inside the Bird”s Nest that stand as a magnificent architectural monument in the city of Beijing. The Beijing airport is another architectural wonder that was built ahead of the Olympic event. When this writer along with other editors and media practitioners visited Beijing, Shandong province and the great city of Shanghai last week saw a sea change every where. The china critics now agree that the Chinese experiment has driven the nation to the desired goal of building a happy, prosperious, dignified and a strong nation that may break the unipolar world in not a very distant future.
China under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping embarked on the second long march to modernize socialism courageously amending Marxism. The ultra socialist at that time criticized China as a revisionist country. Today China has made wonders in achieving accelerated economic growth with strong political stability. Now the critics have mostly vanished. The ultra socialist system collapsed with the dismemberment of Soviet Union.
The transformation of China from under-development to fast growing economy has been possible just because of policy shift from state to the market. It needed lot of courage to take the decision by the leaders in late seventies when the world was ideologically divided. But the decision at the 11th congress of the Chinese communist party changed the history of a nation. Once China won the liberation war through historic long march and now the new China has been completing the second long march by successfully driving the nation towards prosperity. The nations that are now aspiring to change the living condition of their people may learn from China that how a timely policy shift could pull a people from below the poverty line to the height of prosperity and strength.
