Azharul new king of track
Shamsunnahar Chumki dethroned Najmunnahar Beauty as the fastest female sprinter of the country after long seven years on the final day of the two-day Walton 35th National Athletics at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Thursday.
Azharul Islam emerged as the new star of the track winning both the 100 and 400 metre events.
Bangladesh Army topped the medals table with 15 golds, 13 silvers and 10 bronzes, Bangladesh Ansar and VDP were second with 7 golds, six silvers and three bronzes followed by the BJMC who won three gold, eight silver and six bronze medals.
Chumki who was the fastest woman back in 2003, always finished second behind Beauty in 100m sprint for the last seven years. She had a beautiful start and kept her rhythm until the finishing line to complete the distance in 12:00 seconds. Beauty tried to accelerate in the middle of the race but failed to catch Chumki who finished well ahead of the last year’s queen.
Chumki was ecstatic after the triumph. ‘It was the result of my dedication and hard work, I feel confident again, in the past years I lost my self belief to move ahead, this success motivates me to give my best as long as I can,’ said Chumki.
Chumki said she kept the fire within herself after finishing second behind Beauty in the 100m heat on Wednesday. ‘It was a dress rehearsal for me, I thought to keep the best for the ultimate challenge, I am very happy to see myself on top, I thank Ansar & VDP and Alam sir for helping me,’ said the new fastest woman.
Beauty finished second with a timing of 12:30 seconds and Ishrat Jahan Eva was third clocking 12:60 seconds.
Meanwhile, Azharul Islam of Bangladesh clocked 10:09 seconds to be crowned as the fastest man defeating Imran Bhuiyan of Navy, who timed 11:10sec, and Khalilur Rahman of Army who finished in on 11:20 seconds.
Azhraul Islam said his childhood dream has come true. ‘I am happy to se my dream come true, last year I finished fourth and worked hard, I look forward to being the best in the future and hope to make a mark at the Olympics,’ said Azharul.
