The government yesterday decided to demolish all high-risk buildings in Dhaka city.
The high-powered Inter-ministerial Disaster Management Coordination Committee also decided in a meeting to constitute a task force, headed by the Housing and Public Works Ministry, to identify all buildings with high risk of collapse, reports The New Nation.
After the meeting, Food and Disaster Management Minister Abdur Razzaque told reporters that the task force would be empowered to identify all unregistered warehouses across the city.
He said the task force will investigate the nature of chemicals stored in different storehouses in Dhaka city calculating the risk of damage to public life.
Secretaries to different ministries attended the meeting with Food Minister in the chair.
Meanwhile, the real estate regulator RAJUK (Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha) threatened to tear down the building if the risky building owners did not start demolition.
RAJUK authority yesterday starts to demolition a two-storey building at the Gopibagh areas.
RAJUK authority said the building owner constructed this without permission from the RAJUK.
In another incident, demolition of the seven-storey building that tilted on Friday at Begunbari at Tejgaon started yesterday.
Local witnesses said the building’s owner had begun the dismantling works at around 1:00pm.
Some eight workers began knocking down the building starting works from the top floor.
He also said, “It will take two to three months to knock down the entire structure.”
The building (40/A/7 North Begunbari) had tilted on Friday scaring residents and locals of another imminent collapse.
After a site inspection, Dhaka’s real estate regulator RAJUK (Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha) threatened to tear down the building if the owner did not do that by Monday.
All residents had vacated the building by Saturday fearing a danger.
RAJUK hung a demolition notice on Saturday and the building’s electricity connection was snapped.
Mizanur Rahman, assistant police commissioner of Tejgaon Industrial Zone, The New Nation yesterday that police officials were deployed around the building at RAJUK’s request to avoid any untoward incident.
He also revealed that the building’s owner Siraj Miah was in jail.
In another incident demolition of the five-storey building that tilted on Friday at 37 K.B Road at Gandaria started yesterday.
Source said the building’s owner Mozammel Hossain had begun the dismantling at around 1:00pm.
At least 10/12 workers began knocking down the building starting with the top floor.
Mozammel also said, “It will take two to three months to knock down the entire structure.”
In another building a five-storey building at Nakhalpara, that also tilted on Saturday night.
RAJUK authority visited the spot and found it not risky.
