The South Point School and College has extended the suspension classes at its Malibag section till Monday as it is yet to get the report of an expert team that
has surveyed the building which has cracks in it.
The school suspended the classes for four days on April 29 when cracks were found in the building’s top floors.
The school authority alleged that the top three floors of the building were illegally constructed by the building owner.
A committee of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology surveyed the building on April 30, but the report was is yet to submitted to Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha, the school authority said.
A three member committee headed by the university’s civil engineering department teacher Toufiqur Anower also included same department teachers Abdur Jabbar Khan and Al Amin Siddiq.
Toufiqur Anower told New Age that the survey was not completed and the committee would need more time to submit the report.
The school authority on Friday decided to extend the suspension of the classes.
The authority informed the parents of the students that classes would resume of Tuesday.
The founding principal of the school, Hamida Ali, however, told New Age on Saturday, ‘The decision for the reopening of the school will be made after getting the survey report of the BUET team.’
The school opened its Malibagh section in 2011 at three rented buildings including the cracked one.
‘Earlier, there were garment factories at this 13-storey building,’ the school’s senior administration officer Jalil Majumder said, adding that the school rented the whole building from its owner Sohel Chowdhury.
Around 3,500 students are enrolled at this section of the school, the authority said.
Hamida said that they had already rented another building and would shift the school there. ‘It may take four to five months for renovation.’
Rajuk chairman Nurul Huda said that a decision would be made regarding the building after getting the report of the BUET team.
