Documentaries screened at the British Council
At an event marking the ‘Climate Week’, youngsters had an opportunity to discuss with some renowned climate experts of the world at the British Council Auditorium, on Fuller Road, Dhaka. Ian Burton, Emeritus Professor at the University of Toronto and Pablo Suarez, Associate Director of Programmes at the Red Crescent Climate Centre were among the climate scientists who addressed the packed auditorium on March 28.
The programme also featured screening of ten short films. Titled, ‘From the Himalaya to the Bay of Bengal’, the screening attempted to highlight the challenges presented by climate change and their impact on people in Bangladesh and Nepal. Wildlife documentary filmmaker Tanjilur Rahman worked with 10 young filmmakers to put the big issues shaping our planet today in the limelight. The films raised crucial questions about what is happening around the world and presented a rallying cry to the youth to wake up and protect their future. The year long filmmaking project was supported by British Council and Wild Eye.
The short films by 10 aspiring filmmakers are titled “An Omen”, “Living in Clouds”, “An Uncharted Landscape”, “Water Water”, “Climate Confusion”, “Sunday Monday Carbonday”, “Water World”, “Small Things”, “Spreading Colour”, and “Be Smart, Act First”.
Saber Hossain Chowdhury MP, chairperson of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Climate Change, was present as the chief guest at the inaugural event. Commenting on the importance of the programme Chowdhury said, “It is extremely important that we educate our young people about the impact of climate change and I welcome this opportunity for them to engage with international experts.”
Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique, Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University who was present as special guest said, “I am delighted to see such an impressive line up of speakers on the University Campus and I commend the British Council for inviting them here.”
