Local people vandalised a private clinic in Sylhet city on Friday night following the death of an infant allegedly due to negligence in providing treatment.
The clinic authorities said that the two-month-old baby, Meem, daughter of Abdul Muhith, a resident of Barhal village of Fenchuganj upazila, was admitted to the Ma-Moni Clinic at Kumarpara in the city at around 6:00pm on Friday.
Meem, who was suffering form pneumonia and referred by the upazila health officer, was declared dead by the clinic authorities at around 9:30pm that created fury among her family members.
At one stage, a group of some 20 people, attacked the clinic at around 11:30pm and vandalised its furniture and windowpanes of the reception and the visitors’ room.
A team of Kotwali police brought the situation under control, the police said.
The lawmen also detained two youths on charge of hitting them as the police sub-inspector Mobashwir sustained an wound while he was trying to resist the attackers.
Meem’s uncle Shahed Ahmed alleged that the child died because of not giving proper treatment in time. ‘Despite our repeated request, the clinic authorities did not called any special physician still 9:00pm and the child died by this time,’ Shahed alleged.
The clinic managing director Abdul Matin, however, denied the allegation of negligence in treatment.
Kotwali police officer-in-charge Ataur Rahman told New Age that the detained youths were freed after the clinic authorities and relatives of the patient settled the matter mutually.
