The organising committee of the eighth Bangladesh Games cancelled the closing ceremony program which was scheduled for Sunday due to the Savar tragedy, informed Harunur Rashid, chairman of the Games’ steering committee on Friday.
The Bangladesh Olympic Association decided before the Games that they will not stage the closing ceremony but later the ceremonies committee prepared a 30-minute long program for concluding the Games.
However, the organising committee declared on Friday that they will not host the colourful and glitzy closing ceremony at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
‘We planned a cultural program and a 10-minute long fireworks display for the closing ceremony before but after the Savar disaster, we decided to abort the
cultural program and fireworks presentation in the closing ceremony.
‘Now, only the athletes will be present in the venue in the end and Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, finance minister and chairman of the Games’ organising committee will officially announce the conclusion of the Games with a short speech which will be followed by the closure of the burning torch,’ said Harun.
More than 300 people, mostly female apparel workers, were killed and more than two thousand injured as an eight-storey building housing five apparel units and a shopping mall collapsed on a bordering building at Savar on Wednesday morning.
