After a four-year hiccup, domestic hockey returned to field on Monday with Mohammedan Sporting Club notching up a 4-2 win over Bangladesh SC in the opening match of the Club Cup hockey tournament at the Maulana Bhasani Stadium. In the day’s other match, two-time champions Abahani came from behind to play out a 2-2 draw with Sonali Bank. Taher Ali and Belal scored for Sonali Bank in the first half before Khorshedur Rahman
and Maksud Alam Habul pulled the goals back for Abahani.
Despite the win, the four-time Club Cup champions Mohammedan SC’s most of the players looked overweight and lethargic during the match against minnows Bangladesh SC.
But the experience of the Black and Whites was enough to earn them a win as national striker Russell Mahmud Jimmy was the star of the show by scoring one and assisting two goals.
Mohammedan took lead in the fourth minute with a strike from Lalon before Iqbal Nadir levelled the margin four minutes into the second half.
Jimmy restored the lead in the 41st minute before Rubel Hossain made it 3-1 in 48th minute.
Rubel confirmed the win by striking in the 56th minute before Belal reduced the margin to 4-2 in the 64th minute.
